1. Map of Fujian Coastal Defenses (excerpt)

Date 1595 CE, Ming Dynasty

Title Qian Tai Wo Zhuan
Significance The various cities and towns in Fujian (provincial capital, townships, defense settlements, thousand household defense divisions, patrol bureaus, and beacon towers) are clearly marked, thus testifying to the strategic importance of Kinmen.

 

5. Map of Wuzhou (former name of Kinmen)

Title Fujian Yunsi Zhi
Significance The earliest existing map showing the placement of Kinmen saltworks, towns and settlements. Apart from showing saltworks and salt domes, this map also shows the Thousand Household Defense Division, Patrol Bureaus, Houpu Town, Yang Zhai Village, various other villages and important hills (Taiwu Shan, Shuang Shan). The map even includes a navigational indicator, the Daoying Tower on Taiwu Shan. The map is not drawn in the traditional north-south direction; instead, it is centered on the seas near Zhangzhou, with Kinmen as a destination, which shows that Kinmen was a port of call for ships leaving Zhangzhou or Xiamen.

6. Map of Kinmen Island

Date 1737 CE, Qing Dynasty
Author HAO Yulin, XIE Daocheng
Title Fujian Tongzhi
Significance Presenting a picture of Kinmen prior to the middle of the Qing Dynasty, this map labels important towns and villages on the island. In addition, it marks military bases and deployment in the surrounding areas, where ships can berth, where reefs and rocks are located, where troops are stationed, and the positions and number of ships. This map is an indication of how important Kinmen was for the defense of Fujian coastal areas in the early eighteenth century.

 

14. Carte de la Baye de Chin-Chew ou Chang-Chew

Title Petit Atlas Maritime
Significance This map clearly labels islands in Zhangzhou Bay, such as Xiamen, Kinmen, Lieyu, Dadan, Wuyu , and Gulangyu, etc. The cartographic style is very close to contemporary plotting techniques.

 

15. Carte de la Baye de Chin-Chew ou Chang-Chew" (German translation)

Significance This map clearly labels islands in Zhangzhou Bay, such as Xiamen, Kinmen, Lieyu, Dadan, Wuyu , and Gulangyu, etc. The cartographic style is very close to contemporary plotting techniques.

 

 

7. Map of Kinmen’s Mountains and Waters

Significance This map presents a picture of Kinmen Island prior to the mid Qing Dynasty.

 

8. Map of Kinmen

Significance This is the most detailed map of Kinmen produced before the introduction of modern surveying techniques. Small houses with battlements and schematic symbols show the location of Kinmen City and more than 80 settlements and villages, including Lieyu, Dadeng, and Xiaodeng

Significance This map clearly labels Zhangzhou Prefecture, Haicheng, Xiamen, Gulangyu, Kinmen, Lesser Kinmen, Beiding and other places. Unlike previous maps, which recorded Kinmen City and Liaoluo’s status as military strongholds established since the Ming Dynasty, this map labels Houpu Town as a military, political and economic center established since the Qing Dynasty, thus testifying to urban shifts in Kinmen.
